What if Sonic was the basis for a massive multiplayer online role-playing game?
Specifically what if my adaptation of the concept was?
Specifically what if I was so fixated on this extended fan-fiction concept I kept coming up with way too many characters, concepts, backstories and such as well as wanting to pay homage to the sadly recently ended Archie comics series?
I've gotten back into playing World of Warcraft and I'm enjoying myself, but I do wish there was an alternative to the pervasive 'sword and sorcery' genre all of these games seem to inhabit. Sonic I see as ideally inhabiting a middle ground between all kinds of genres: science fiction/fantasy/post-apocolyptic. You can have soaring tales of warring aliens, grounded ideas of desperate rebellion, and sillier notions or animals just living their lives in a world forced to become far more wild and strange; just like it's inhabitants.
Oh, the comics ended? It was at one point the longest-running single comic brand name, I think! I have some old issues of it and liked what I saw. For a comic book that wasn't meant to be taken too seriously it had an elaborate setting and some character development.
About the general idea, it sounds a little like what Overwatch was originally meant to be, with factories cranking out killer robots and an organization fighting a war against them. I've seen a couple of amateur MMOs and some of them have made the mistake of copying the same generic gameplay as popular ones rather than trying to do something new and different. I'm not sure what you'd do in a Sonic themed RPG since the comics seemed to have character drama, stealth, engineering and politics instead of just running really fast until you hit a wall of spikes and drop your rings.
Robotnik is paranoid (surprise) so he doesn't like a powerful army that can make it's own decisions or go anywhere it pleases without his express permission...but he's a LITTLE more lax on his use of vehicles for scouts and spies. The defects just borrow the smaller self contained power units for those and use them themselves. They need to keep repairing and charging these engines (as opposed to city power which is constant) but they see the trade off as worth it.
By the way, I imagine that, in addition to being law enforcement and occasionally reserve military forces, the SWATBots would also have been public servants ala the NS-5s from I, Robot.
They aren't ALWAYS fighting. I was amused and inspired by early Sonic strips that show heavily armed Swatbots cleaning up trash. I can imagine Robotnik just having decommissioned or on-leave bots doing all manner of menial tasks. Some things need a human/mobian touch but he's hoping as technology improves he'll be able to robotize living beings without their will but with all of their dexterity.
There is only one Umbar representative in the Knothole resistance: Tails. But since Tails has sort of regressed into another personality after a knock to the head he's forgotten his rivalry. If it ever resurfaced or if Alice the raven learned they were at war it could turn nasty very quickly...
I tried to make one XD
I think they're a bit like Neanderthals
It's a Japan only game
Probably because the mmo rpg market is a tough market and Phantasy Star is more of a cult hit here in the west than in Japan
That and sega dosnt want to spend a penny on more severs for other regions :/
But being serious though, Phantasy Star Online does have an interesting plot hook, in that you're basically trying to piece together a mystery where a spaceship trying to colonize an alien planet went boom, and you're trying to figure out what made the spaceship go boom (at least before all the kawaii pandering that ensues).
I actually remember you trying to discuss your concept for an MMO in the vein of JMMORPG you saw, and trying to focus more on the serious story instead of the kawaii moe girl bait: I think you called it "Janissary X", or something like that (since I remember asking what reason you chose the name of a Turkish infantry unit or a game taking inspiration from Japanese MMOs).
Maybe the Dark Oak for the Black Arms needs to be renamed. Maybe Black Enforcer or something?
Anyways, did you want to hear my ideas that I tried to share with you on your first upload of this before you took it down to re-upload?
Sorry I figured after this one worked I didn't need the other one.
Anyways, if you're still here when I finished typing, mind if you hear my suggestions on how to tweak the setting, based on my idea that the Mobians originally came from the Sol dimension (instead of being mutated animals of our Earth)?
Instead of having the Mobians be mutated animals after the Xorda blasted Earth, I was going to have them be a race that came from the Sol Dimension, after they revolted against the rule of Blaze's ancestors (The "Aubades" as you call them - side note, how did you come up with that name?), and used the Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald to travel to Earth's dimension, with the Mobians arriving and colonizing islands in the South Pacific (based on canon sources saying Sonic was born on Christmas Island (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christma…), and Tails was born on South Island (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Is…). The Mobians would be isolationist for much of their history, using the power of the Chaos Emeralds to obscure their presence from the civilized world (with the explorers and colonists who "vanish" getting written off as fallen to extreme weather storms or the like).
As for the human factions, they evolved much like our timeline until somewhere between the 2050s and 2100s, where a new Cold War emerges between the United Federation (a restructured United States, sort of like the Fallout USA having 13 Commonwealths instead of 50 States) and its allies, against the Red Star Republics (basically a vaguely neo-communist/ultranationalist movement in former soviet states, especially in Russia and China). The factional conflict was strictly waged via proxy wars to prevent a MAD nuclear apocalypse, but both sides were investing in new weapons tech to be "nuclear proof" - in the RSRs case, it was increased mechanization and robotization (which would lay the seeds for the Robotnik Empire), while the UF would use the GUN to create genetic supersoldiers who, in addition to surviving the radiation of a post-nuclear world, would also be far more durable and agile than regular soldiers, eventually leading to the "Ultimate Lifeform" project responsible for creating Shadow.
Basically, the inciting incident is the Space Colony ARK Massacre, where the GUN forcibly terminated the Ultimate Lifeform project (massacring the staff, killing Maria Kintobar, and capturing Gerald Kintobar before executing him for treason), causing Julian Kintobar to defect to th.e RSR out of revenge (taking the new name "Ivo Robotnik"). However, while Robotnik thought the RSR was fighting against the corruption of the UF and GUN, he learns the hard way that the RSR is basically just as corrupt and oppressive as the enemy they fight, if not moreso. Robotnik gets the idea that the failings of all governments (democracy, communism, fascism, etc.), are all the faults of human fallibility... and concludes that, to form a perfect government, human fallibility had to go.
And thus began the Robotnik Empire, where Ivo Robotnik began to "roboticize" those he deemed dangerous to the world's order: starting with the corrupt leaders of the RSR, and quickly roboticizing the dissidents and resistance within his new Empire. He launched an offensive war against the UF, and when they tried to retaliate with nukes, Robotnik's anti-missile network swatted virtually all of them out of the sky. The Robotnik Empire has overrun much of the world, with the United Federation and GUN barely holding out in the Americas.
Robotnik then learns of the Chaos Emeralds based on journals written by Gerald Kintobar, which the Robotnik Empire uncovered after raiding a GUN blacksite. Believing the Chaos Emeralds would break the deadlock with the UF and GUN once and for all, Ivo Robotnik personally lead his mechanical vanguard into the South Pacific islands inhabited by the Mobians - although they could use the Chaos Emeralds to scatter individual ships and airplanes, they couldn't hold back the concentrated waves of Robotnik's mechanical hordes. After crushing the bulk of the Mobians forces in their capital, and imprisoning the King and Queen of the Acorn royal family, the only resistance against the Robotnik Empire in Mobius is led by Princess Sally Acorn, who united a small number of scattered Mobians, and is in hiding in the Knothole Forest.
Ok, I know that was a HUGE infodump, and I apologize. Please write back when you read all of this, ok?
